According to the WSA, from January 2020 to January 2021, the production of Direct Reduced Iron (sponge iron) in Iran has increased from 2.626 million tons to 3.026 million tons and has increased by about 15%.
Why is this Type of Iron Called Sponge Iron?
Iron oxide rocks absorb carbon during a process when they leave the ground. In this natural reduction, when iron ore is heated with carbon, a surface with perforated marks is formed, hence it is called “sponge iron”. In fact, this product is obtained from direct reduction of iron ore and it is also called DRI.
The Use of Sponge Iron is Increasing
About 5% of the world’s steel is produced from sponge iron (DRI) and this trend is increasing. Today, sponge iron is made by reducing iron ore without melting it. This makes it an efficient energy source for special steelmakers who rely on scrap metal.
